Having a slim body is considered very important in today's society and being overweight or obese may lead to dissatisfaction with your body image, low self-esteem and high risk of depression.
Overweight people report experiencing more symptoms of depression, compared to people with normal weight. They are also more likely to receive degrading behavior that makes them feel ignored or have other experiences that make them feel ashamed of themselves. Due to the fact that being overweight or obese is considered a great disadvantage in the modern society, the vast majority of people will try to lose weight sooner or later.
But, why do most of them fail?
A key factor that greatly affects whether you lose weight or not, is the psychological factor. According to a recent survey 70% of people, when nervous, consume a larger amount of food than what their bodies actually needs. What is more our metabolism, like all other autonomous biological functions, is controlled largely by our unconscious brain.
So being overweight or obese is caused mainly due to your psychological programming (of which you may not be even conscious), which not only determines the speed of your metabolism, but also your food consumption habits. This means that even though you make conscious efforts to shed off the pounds, your unconscious mind undermines these efforts.
This explains why most of your attempts to get a slim body are doomed to failure. Although the conscious desire and determination can prevail for some time and you may lose some extra pounds, it is certain that not only will you gain them back, but that you will put on even more weight after the termination of the diet. To stop that from happening there should be no conflict between the conscious and the unconscious part of your brain.
But, why would your subconscious mind want to keep you fat?
One reason may be that deep down you are afraid of change. Losing weight can change your life. You will become much more attractive to the opposite sex and you will stop being invisible. Although, this may sound like a positive change it can take you out of your comfort zone. For this reason you may be subconsciously sabotaging your weight loss efforts.
What is more, food gives you a sense of security. Adults then feel insecure are more likely to resort to overeating to relive this soothing sense of safety they felt when they were children and were fed by their mothers. So, before starting any diet you first need to resolve all these issues and stop having conflicting feelings about slimming down. After that, the next step is to find the right diet.
